Yesterday i met an owl after meeting few spiritual persons. He looked into my eyes with a strong look and flew away.

What is its significance in Shamanism?

Owl is clairavoyance and a dark messenger. Also guides soul to afterlife (crane carries it).

Owl would be your totem animal, first meeting? Any ways you get gift of nightsight, seeing the unseen. He was gift and message.

Owl feathers make no noise, silent flight, silent hunters. Message of hidden enemies or hidden attack. Perhaps the friends are not as they seem. What are your senses saying, the owl reminds you saw and know something, what or "who" was it?

owl means alot of differant things to alot of differant peoples. I had an owl feather on me one day and this native guy thought i was trying to put black magic on him. many natives in north amerrica see it as a messenger of death and ill fortune, not all though. i have sat in owl lodges with balck foot owl medicine people, owls have so much light in them they can see in the dark, they can see into places that others cannot. thats my experince with owl. my personal experince not what some one taught me or told me or something i read.

if you want to know an animals medicine go out and meet it. intoduce your self to it and get to know it as a person. sit and open your self up to owl learn from it. if you want to know what the owl might have been trying to tell you afterr meeting some spiritual people go ask owl sure as hell dont ask us, owl was talking to you not us! owl could have been telling you to watch out those spirtual folks are decieving you or themselves. who knows! go and develope a relationship with owl and learn to commune with it, seems like owl just opened up the conversation.
its best not to turn living things into symbols but to honor them as perons.

2nd on the notion that to find the meaning: one must always look inward.

meditation, ritual or even deep thought can help to flush out the meaning. sometimes books and talking to other people can be helpful in triggering a memory, yet ultimately just sitting with the experience will help bring the truth to light.

seeing an owl is definitely a strong sign of something. they are very intense creatures. they are sometimes linked with the beginning of a journey: mental, emotional or physical.

in the broad sense, historically owls are very often linked with wisdom. some people think it is a symbol of all that is bad, some think it symbolizes all that is good.

as always the context is decisive. 'my' context is that owl is beautiful powerful wise and predatory. owl sees beyond average eyes, sees what is hidden to most.

and owl is my medicine as well. when i ask for guidance owl comes. usually white.. which is generally associated with wakan tanka (sp?) or great spirit.

i was instructed by my medicine woman to take notice of from what direction it came and which direction it went so that you can read the message better... right road equals physical and left road equals spirit... so if owl comes in from left and goes right it is message from spirit into physical ... left and back out left spirit spirit... etc.

Owl is also keeper of secrets. Its time is night so it works in and with the dreamtime. If owl visited you, also check out Hawk. Hawk is the opposite of Owl. They will share the same nest as Hawk, when hawk is out and awake during the day, owl is in the nest sleeping, and vice versa.

Before you start using Owl Medicine, make sure you understand all of its meanings. You or people can get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Study, practice, and pray with it, before you start using it.

To the first Europeans, Ontz (owl) was considered a messenger from the spirit worlds - particularly the Underworld - to the human worlds. The Ontz brings special sight - the ability to see in darkness and is the only large bird to fly during the time of grandmother Ila - Moon.

Like several other people have said, don't settle for generalized totemic messages. Ontz means different things to different cultures and the only way to know for sure what Ontz is communicating is to ask her yourself.

I come from Ontz Clan on my matrileneal side so I have a close relationship with her. When Ontz comes to me, she usually brings a message from my Ancestors.

    Your experience may vary....

cool cool because i just had an owl experience too. while i have had many animal messengers, this is the secong time the great horned has visited me in 3 years. i am posting a pic in the photos and as you see, i use owl as my icon, though this isn't the same guy who came recently. we drove home about sunset, i had a feeeling to look over to my shed and there he was! seriously large, great horned owl. his head was a full 360 degrees and we connected. i spoke to him in my way and he has been a positive omen and great messenger. (i did not take the snap of the owl, my mother did) and yes, it was during a full moon... thanks for asking the question and all the great messages to follow.

the first meet was a trip. i was with my then boyfriend. we were parked on a cliff in malibu snoozing in the van. i was awoke by a loud swoosh and sat up and looked out the window. there he was, another great horned owl, within 2 feet of my gaze, sitting on a pole. he stared as well and wouldnt you know, it was another full moon too (we were just out of sweatlodge that eve). i have had various experiences with owl coming from mountain living, but these guys appeared in a strange way. i like strange.

      peaces y'all, thanks again!

Thank you all friends for your comments.

It came from Left and went to right. What does spirit to physical signifies? I am new to Shamanism, how do medicines work? Where to get them?

        Regards,

          Hi
Left to right could be significant as past to future (or other way depends on what it signifies for you)
as for medicines best to be given them, you really need to know what you are doing

Blessings.. Owl .. Hawk.. two incredible awesome totems for me.. and I so love reading everyone's sharing and sense of them ... I agree with the prevailing 'idea' that one must entertain the journey within to truly gather the meaning in-to themselves as to what a particular animal 'means ' to them in their appearance.. and at the same time reading/ hearing or sharing some ideas or senses of the animals.. might also support us in openning to an area that we might not ' have seen' until it was revealed..
I am appreciating the open sharing power and clarity that has been woven here ..

Owl visited me about three years ago at night. It flew over my car as I parked at my house and landed at the entry to my door. For me, the experience was so unique. It captured my imagination and my respect.

Two weeks ago it came again and stood on a pole at the gate to my community, seeming to be waiting for me to arrive home that night. We looked at each other for about 30 seconds, I reached for my iPhone camera and snapped a picture. I looked up and saw his wings fly off to the right (my left). I opened the photo on my camera and the owl was not there, although the entire area where he flew was in the picture. My feeling was of pure awe. Because he had visited me before, this time I was intent on looking at him and sort of feeling the experience. I'm not sure the meaning of the visit, but it did feel like a message, a visit and a communication. I sense that I am to slow down and look and hear what is around me and that I'm not alone. I am protected.

I just wanted to share this.

I was driving to work yesterday and found a dead, great horned owl in the middle of my street. It was dead and I carefully moved it to the side of the road, I believe I had seen the same owl day before (a block away - same vicinity) high up in a pine tree being chased by two crows. Perhaps it was near their nest. This is the 3rd time I have seen him. What is the meaning of finding him? He was beautiful!

My mom passed away on Aug 6, 2010 at 9:00 pm. At 4:30 am I was awakened by a loud owl hooting outside my window.. I knew and felt that it was a sign from her. 2 weeks later I was at our lake cottage an hour away from home and a different owl woke me up in the middle of the night. This has happened 4 times. Last Thursday evening as I was driving to the cottage I saw a huge owl on a electrical sire. It is the FIRST time I have ever seen an owl in my life. I believe it is my mother letting me know she is close.

There's a surfeit of silliness going on. Maybe what you saw was an owl that was out and about. Not every encounter is dripping with spiritual and symbolic significance.

I don't remember ever seeing an owl in the wild before. Each of the past two evenings I have been startled by them. I was driving home last night, then to my significant other's house tonight, and each time an owl flew very close to my car, so much so that I ducked thinking I would hit it. I was on two different roads, but both times the owl flew very close to my car, seeming to fly at me from the left and then away to my right. It was strange and left me feeling unsettled, wondering why....

Owl says I am yours, your totem/medicine, learn about me and my behavior in the wild. Also, remember, collisions can be fatal so a warning of paying attention and that is what it caused. Owl meicine is about wisdom, having and gaining it, message also is heal. Blessings, KWB

If an owl is constantly visiting it may be your spirit animal. Owls usually mean psychic - Or visitors from your family past (ancestors). If an owl touches you it is a warning of mortality for you or a close friend or family.
I used to think maybe that like my voice, recently they even visit when I sit in my car in silence, they come low to the ground by where I am and sit and visit. I have feelings inside ( instincts about whether there is a good or bad nature of things, owls are all love and wisdom).
