Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:10 PMthis makes me think of something i thought the other day.
religion is not a belief or group of beliefs, it's system of rules and rituals.
a belief is just our way of making sense of the things we experience.
it doesn't matter what you believe, if you don't follow structured ritual and rules, then you aren't religious.
I hope this is relevant. -

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:41 PM}}}so then, Shamanism would be a religion? Most Shaman follow certain rules and practice rituals {{{
you make a fair point, but i think that many known as shaman, may do very different rituals to each other.
I think that to define it more, I would say all members of a religion do the same ritual at the same time.
of course my description was pretty generalised, it would need a lot of elaboration to get any real accuracy. -

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:51 PMi think only the shaman can answer this point-is shaman a religion.,?
from an outside veiw--mine it appears that way.,but i dont know didly--just my feeling -

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:56 PMreligion to me has allways meant--
dogma
ritual
routine

not saying its right or wrong-- -

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 1:27 PMMany Religions have leaders that are ordained. Ordained, relative to a particular set of rituals and rules. Shamans are not ordained however; most have rituals relative to their tribe. Today's Shaman works with the belief system of the person they are assisting if they work outside of their tribe. So, most people that have researched Shamanic practices would not call it a religion. -

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 11:28 AMYou can believe anything you want...
But what good does it bring to your life or those around you..
You can believe this is poetry..
You can believe ithis an expression from a tormented mind..
It's all in your head...
Floating between worlds or solid into one..
One belief costs one other belief..
If I believed all kittens should be drowned at birth..
I would not believe they should live.. so i could cuddle them..
Poodeleewooh..
But still...
Some people hate kittycats...

Re: Belief Structures / Enforment System
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:07 PMthat is, the other one. I'm not at all into the dark magic stuff. That's still in the Judeo Christian framework. I have zero interest in any of that stuff. Do I have to be of that mind to be respected in my beliefs? (Or non-belief)

Get ready for love! Praise Him!
Get ready tot love! Praise Him!
Get ready for love! Get readyl
Well, most of all nothing much
ever really happens
And God rides high up in the ordinary sky
Until we find ourselves at out most distracted
And the miracle that was promised
creeps quietly by
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Get ready for love! Praise Him!
Get ready for love! Praise Him!
The mighty wave their hankies from their
high-windowed palace
Sending grief and joy down in supportable doses
And we search high and low without
merty or malice
While the gate to the Kingdom swings
shut and closes
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Praise Him till you've forgotten
what you're praising Him for
Praise Him till you've forgotten
what you're praising Him for
Then praise Him a little bit more
Yeah, praise Him a little bit more
Praise Him till you've forgotten
what you're praising Him for
Praise Him tillyou've forgotten what
you're praising Him for
Praise Him a little bit more
Yeah, praise Him a little bit more
Get ready for love! Praise Him!
Get ready for love! Get ready!
I searched the seven seas and I've looked
under the carpet
And browsed through the brochures
that govern the skies
Then I was just hanging around, doing
nothing und looked up to see
His face burned in the retina of your eyes
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Calling every boy and girl
Calling all around the world
Get ready for love! Praise Him!
Get ready for love! Praise Him! -

Re: Nick Cave, There She Goes my Beautiful World
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 7:43 PMFor anyone who has not seen the TV series "Cosmos" (first broadcast on PBS in 1980) I highly recommend it. It was recently updated to include pictures taken by our probes since the 1970s. There are hundreds of astronomers and other scientists around today who first took an interest in those subjects as a result of viewing that series three decades ago. -
