Re: riddle me this
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 7:57 AMNot too difficult. Has it's origins in alchemy. Probably in Western culture, alcohol was first distilled by alchemists. The alcohol distilled from the wine was it's spirit; the spirit of the wine, here spirit having the meaning of essence or breath of the wine. So distilled alcohol became known as spirits. -

Fri, February 8, 2008 - 11:25 AMHasn't alcohol had a negative effect on all cultures? -
-
Re: riddle me this
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 11:37 AMNot really. For example, in the Jewish culture, wine is considered sacred and a major part of all holidays.
It's like most other things, the abuse of which have negative effects. Sadly, certain genotypes have a propensity for alcohol abuse. For them alcohol will nearly always be negative.

Re: riddle me this
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 1:46 PMAll native cultures have used fermented beverages that contain alcohol. North American Natives Drank Cactus Wine and other beverages long before the arrival of whiskey... Tiny Example... Goes back to Banana Brew on MT. Kilimanjaro... Natural Fermented Beverages are part of a diet that promotes healthy living... It is my opinion that Distilled spirits are for putting herbs into... Or maybe to sterilize something Or run an engine...all kinds of uses... -

Re: riddle me this
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 3:54 PMmy 75 year old mother and her 82 year old sister cooked fennel in 180 proof clear drinking alcohol (ever clear) on the family midwest farm to give them the stamina to dry wall and paint a room and remodel a bathroom. they say they got the recipe from their folks. a few swallows helps you get out the door to fix something in 20 to 40 below weather. makes me wonder which is more spirited, those ladies who were raised on farm in the depression or the liquor! lol -

Re: riddle me this
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 12:05 PMapparently Jung thought it not a coincidence that sprits are called as they are and people also use the word to refer to spiritual realms, as Jung believed many alcoholics have latent spirituality in them that was blocked or undeveloped. He theorised that was the reason many addicts were addicts because they found the mundane everyday world frustrating as they found no spiritual sustenance in it.

Re: riddle me this
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 3:49 PMi came to a realization of why they are called spirits, because they have spirit, and have the power to summon spirits(divine archetypal forces). through personal exploration of the spirits, you can notice the difference between them, and see which ones work best for you, if you chose to work with them.
your asking about the effect on native culture.....the effect of alcohol on indigenous americans was so sever because of the actual hereditary trait that causes alcohol addiction. it is an enzyme deficiency that effects the way the body processes alcohol, which causes the desire to consume each successive drink, to increase expenintaly. this trait is extremely rare outside of the asian and indigenous american cultural groups.
su
when AA says that alcoholism is a hereditary disease that can never be overcome, it is a lie. they are using the information falsely to sustain their cult of dependence. -
