I think this is a good place to ask. If I can't help answer your questions, there are lots of knowledgeable people here who may be able to.

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 3:45 AMyou mentioned in the first interview I believe that people sing while during these experiences, do they sing like the Santo Daime, or is it something that just naturally occurs along with other things? -

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 6:15 AMAlso, in the second part, I like how you described the how the Ayahuasca can help you see "more" of what is there. What has your experience been with not only your reality perspective changing after that first experience, but when you are not actually under the influence?
I've talked with many that have experiences several days after the drinking of Ayahuasca; not to be mistaken as a side effect of course. -

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 7:24 AMI would hesitate to say anything about what happens after a first experience, since, for many people, nothing much happens at all.
We Americans like the quick fix, the red pill, the single epiphany, the transformative experience. But I think the sacred plants most often work slowly and subtly, in plant time, not in human time. For many people, the effects of ceremony may not be felt for months, and then the effects may not be visionary, but rather felt in stirrings of intention, new ways of looking at the world, a greater openness to wonder.
I am concerned that telling people that they will change their reality perspective after their first experience may lead to unrealistic expectations, and to self-blame when those expectations are unmet. As I said, I think that, for many people, sacred plant medicines work slowly, over time, and sometimes subtly, so that one day you realize, to your surprise, that the world seems different -- more wonderful, more miraculous, and filled with the spirits. For me, that is the lesson of the ayahuasca vision -- not necessarily the healing of our perhaps irremediably flawed selves, but rather a way to see through the world to the wonders that were there all along, and we could not see.

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 8:31 AMlove this perspective. it is impossible to have the proverbial "silver bullet" when working with things that are not static in nature.
As far as the perspective of not seeing a lot of what the world has to offer in the "wonderful, miraculas, spirit filled, etc.", the perspective is a beautiful way of solving problems in general for me. We soon learn that we do not construct solutions out of thin air. They were there all along just as all of the wonderful things you have described.
thanks for sharing.

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 10:24 AMAlthough, life changing experiences are possible in the first session. Mine certainly was. Sort of like a first kiss, it can be earth shaking or awkward. The important thing is to not have expectations. To be open and if "nothing" is happening, to be fully present and aware of "nothing". Not a bad place to be really.
We are multi-leveled beings with extraordinarily complex brains and bodies, much of which lies out of reach of our conscious minds. My feeling is that if "nothing" is happening, it just means that what is happening is happening on a level below conscious awareness, and may very well be stuff you really wouldn't want to be aware of. One of the beauty of the plants is that they seem to know exactly what is needed and how much we can handle. -

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 11:06 AMIndeed so..
It does take you deep into these levels.
It took me back to te spirit.. the soul..
Through all levels of consciousness..
The primordial forces.. that make your heart beat and your lungs breath..
To insectoid consciousness that creates structures.. reptile consciousness..
To a sense of impending doom.. through hell and heaven...
I spoke with a huge snake.. and with lightning orbs that healed my spirit body...
This experience was life changing... in an absolute positive way.. and it has healed me for life...
If the soul is healed.. the rest will follow... the mind broke open..so to speak...
I respect anyone who undertakes this journey of self-awareness.. and creating awareness around them..

Re: C-Realm Podcast on Ayahuasca Shamanism
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 7:20 AMThe songs are called icaros, and are, generally speaking, conveyed to the shamans by the plant and protective spirits -- during fasting and in dreams and visions -- to be used in healing, protection, and defense. Some shamans repeat some of their songs at different ceremonies, and people who regularly attend may pick up the melody and at least a few words of the songs, and may sing along. You can read more about icaros, and hear some samples, at www.singingtotheplants.com/list...ongs/ .
